Åbo Akademis Alumner rf, Åbo Akademi University’s Alumni, is Finland’s oldest alumni association. Founded in 1922, it was then known as Åbo Akademiförening rf. The association’s task was to support Åbo Akademi University’s activities both financially and through voluntary support.
In 1940, an association was founded for former students at Åbo Akademi University. It was known as Åbo Akademiker r.f. and its purpose was to maintain contact with and interest in Åbo Akademi University and to support Åbo Akademi University’s Student Union.
Over the years, the paths of the two associations increasingly crossed in terms of their aims and working methods. Consequently, in 2002, they decided to merge and took the name Akademiföreningen Åbo Akademiker r.f.
Since 2018, the association is called Åbo Akademis Alumner.
The purpose of the association is to maintain contact with and interest in Åbo Akademi University and Åbo Akademi University’s Student Union, as well as to support them both financially and through volunteering. Thanks to the membership fees (EUR 20 per year), the association can organise and give grants to alumni activities, hand out doctoral awards, and support the Career Contact mentoring programme, among other things.
Members receive news from Åbo Akademi University and its student union via member newsletters and via the Meddelanden magazine from Åbo Akademi University. The association also organises member trips, afterworks and the Brahe Ball in Turku or Alumni Dinner in Vasa every other year.
